Anup Jalota’s Remark Fuels Rahman Debate
Singer suggests reconversion amid AR Rahman’s ‘power shift’ comments
January 21, 2026: Veteran singer Anup Jalota has intensified the controversy surrounding Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman after reacting to Rahman’s recent remarks about an alleged “power shift” and possible communal bias in the music industry. In a video statement that went viral, Jalota controversially suggested that if Rahman feels he is losing work due to religion, he should consider converting back to Hinduism. The remark triggered sharp criticism online and added a new layer to the already polarised debate sparked by Rahman’s interview with BBC Asian Network.
The controversy began when Rahman reflected on a perceived slowdown in work over the past eight years, saying that creative decision-making power may have shifted and hinting that communal factors could also play a role, though indirectly. He also described Chhaava as a “divisive film,” adding that audiences are intelligent enough to distinguish truth from manipulation. Several celebrities reacted strongly, with Kangana Ranaut accusing Rahman of being “blinded by hate,” while singer Shaan argued that lack of work cannot always be linked to religion.
As reactions mounted, Rahman’s daughter Raheema posted a message calling out growing intolerance and misuse of religion, stressing the need for humanity over hatred. Rahman later issued a clarification video, reaffirming his love for India and saying his words had been misunderstood. Emphasising gratitude and national pride, he said his only aim was to serve and uplift through music. Despite claims of fewer opportunities, Rahman continues to work on major projects and is currently preparing for the ambitious Ramayana, alongside composer Hans Zimmer.
