Anurag Kashyap Faces Legal Trouble After Controversial Remarks on Brahmins, Court Issues Notice

April 25, 2025: Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, whose recent remarks about the Brahmin community sparked a widespread backlash, is now embroiled in further legal troubles. The Surat Court has issued a notice demanding Kashyap’s appearance on May 7, 2025. The court has warned that failure to comply will lead to more severe legal actions.

The controversy stems from Kashyap’s social media posts regarding the censorship of his film Phule, a biopic on social reformer Jyotirao Phule. His comments, which were widely seen as offensive towards the Brahmin community, led to significant public outcry. While Kashyap later apologized for his remarks, the complainant, lawyer Kamlesh Rawal, insists that the apology is insufficient, calling for legal consequences to follow.

The case against Kashyap is part of a larger pattern of controversial statements the filmmaker has made in the past. He has previously been involved in disputes over his comments about Hindu society and other religious groups, with a 2020 remark on Hindu society still lingering in the public consciousness. In 2024, he was also involved in a reported altercation with actor Anil Kapoor, which added fuel to his controversial image.

Kashyap’s latest legal woes stem from his critique of the censorship surrounding Phule, which he argued was an attempt to suppress the film’s social message. His remarks on social media escalated quickly, and while he later apologized for insulting the Brahmin community, many saw his apology as insufficient, especially given the hurt caused to various individuals within the community.

In an Instagram post, Kashyap expressed deep regret for his comments, explaining that his anger got the better of him and that he “forgot his limits” when responding to critics. He went on to apologize to the Brahmin community, acknowledging the pain caused by his words and emphasizing that many people he respected were part of the community.

“I spoke badly about the entire Brahmin community. That community whose many people have been in my life, are still there and contribute a lot. Today, all of them are hurt by me. My family is hurt by me. Many intellectuals, whom I respect, are hurt by my anger and my way of speaking,” Kashyap wrote, offering a heartfelt apology to his family, colleagues, and the Brahmin community.

Despite the apology, the legal cases against him continue to mount. In Indore, a separate complaint has been filed by Anoop Shukla, accusing Kashyap of attempting to sow hatred between social groups. The complainant argues that Kashyap’s remarks were not only offensive but also designed to create division among communities in India.

Kashyap has vowed to be more mindful of his words moving forward, promising to work on controlling his anger and choosing his words carefully. He also asked the Brahmin community to direct their anger toward him, rather than his family, who had been unfairly targeted by some of his critics.

This ongoing legal battle indicates that despite his apology, Kashyap will likely face serious consequences for his comments, as public opinion and legal action continue to shape the aftermath of the controversy.
