Ariana Grande And Cynthia Erivo Received Equal Pay, Universal Pictures Debunks Pay Disparity Rumours

November 27, 2024: Universal Pictures has officially dismissed rumors of a pay disparity between Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who play Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, in the upcoming movie adaptation of the beloved musical. A spokesperson for the studio clarified that reports of unequal compensation are “completely false,” emphasizing that both actresses received equal pay for their roles.

The rumors first surfaced on social media platforms like TikTok and Reddit earlier this week, with some users alleging that Grande had earned $15 million for the film while Erivo was paid only $1 million. These claims, which were unverified and based on “internet fodder,” quickly gained traction and were picked up by various news outlets, sparking controversy. However, sources close to the production confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that both Erivo and Grande were compensated equally for their work on the film, which is directed by Jon M. Chu.

Wicked, adapted from Gregory Maguire’s best-selling novel, tells the untold story of the witches of Oz, with Erivo portraying the misunderstood Elphaba and Grande playing the bubbly Glinda. The film’s screenplay was written by Winnie Holzman (who penned the original Broadway musical’s book) in collaboration with Dana Fox. Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the music and lyrics for the stage version, is also adapting the score for the film.

The cast of the highly anticipated film includes not only Erivo and Grande but also notable names such as Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, and Bowen Yang. Despite the buzz surrounding the pay rumors, both Erivo and Grande have publicly spoken about their positive off-screen relationship and shared their excitement about working together, even expressing interest in returning to the Broadway stage together in the future.

Universal’s swift dismissal of the pay disparity rumors serves to reinforce that both actresses are equally valued in the production, quelling the controversy before it could gain further momentum.
