Finally, the wait is over for Ariana Grande fans as her music video for ‘The Boy Is Mine’ has been released. Featuring ‘Gossip Girl’ star Penn Badgley, the video made its debut on June 7, according to People.
Set in a city reminiscent of New York, the video opens with a sanitation worker voicing frustration over the fictional Mayor Max Starling’s negligence in addressing a rat infestation. The scene quickly transitions to Ariana Grande, who is seen concocting a potion in her home. As she works, a news report featuring Brandy and Monica—the original singers of ‘The Boy Is Mine’—plays on her television, introducing a segment about the mayor’s new initiative.
Starling announces his plan to release stray cats into the streets to combat the rat problem. Grande finds this idea “brilliant” and it is revealed that she is making a love potion to make the mayor fall in love with her. Despite her cat accidentally breaking the potion bottle, she manages to salvage a portion of it before embarking on a quest dressed in a masked Catwoman-esque costume.
The narrative intensifies as Grande breaks into Starling’s house, observing him from a distance before he discovers her sitting on his bed. Initially frightened, he tries to leave, but she convinces him to stay and gives him the potion. He then removes her mask, revealing her identity, and discards the love potion because he has already fallen for her.
Directed by Christian Breslauer, who also directed music videos such as ‘We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)’ and ‘Yes, And?’, this visually captivating video is a fresh take on a classic hit.
Ariana Grande first teased the music video on her Instagram on May 27 and hinted at Badgley’s involvement with a TikTok post on June 3, showing him dancing to the song’s chorus. The new rendition of ‘The Boy Is Mine’ reimagines Brandy and Monica’s 1998 hit and is part of Grande’s upcoming seventh studio album, ‘Eternal Sunshine’.
Grande’s innovative approach and Breslauer’s direction have brought a new dimension to this beloved song, offering fans an exciting visual and musical experience.
