Arijit Singh Steps Away From Playback Singing
Singer announces end of a defining Bollywood journey in New Year message to fans
January 28, 2026: Indian singer Arijit Singh has announced that he will no longer take up new assignments as a playback vocalist, marking the end of a celebrated chapter in Hindi film music. In a New Year message to fans, the singer thanked listeners for their unwavering love and support, calling his career a “wonderful journey” and confirming his decision to step away from playback singing. Widely regarded as one of the most influential voices of contemporary Bollywood, Singh’s soulful renditions have shaped a generation of romantic soundtracks.
Born on April 25, 1987, in Jiaganj, West Bengal, Arijit Singh was introduced to music at a young age and trained extensively in Indian classical music, tabla, Rabindra Sangeet and pop. He first gained public recognition in 2005 as a finalist on the reality show Fame Gurukul, followed by a win on 10 Ke 10 Le Gaye Dil. Though early success was gradual, Singh’s persistence and behind-the-scenes work as an assistant to composer Pritam helped him find his footing in the industry.
His career-defining breakthrough came in 2013 with Tum Hi Ho from Aashiqui 2, a song that became a cultural phenomenon and earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer. Over the years, Singh built a reputation for versatility across genres and languages, becoming a mainstay of Indian cinema’s musical identity. While he continues to remain active in music in other capacities, his announcement signals the close of an era for Bollywood playback singing.
