November 3, 2024: Legendary singer Asha Bhosle celebrated Bhai Dooj with Mumbai BJP Chief Ashish Shelar, engaging in the traditional rituals of the occasion.
Asha applied tilak on Shelar’s forehead, and he sought her blessings by touching her feet, highlighting the cultural significance of the day.
Bhai Dooj, known by various names across India—like Bhau Bij in North India and Bhai Tika in Maharashtra—celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. In Bengal, it’s called Bhai Phonta, while in southern states like Karnataka and Telangana, it’s recognized as Yama Dwitiya. This festival commemorates the day Goddess Yamuna invited her brother Yamraj for a meal, symbolizing love and familial ties.
Sisters perform rituals, including applying tilak and fasting, to wish their brothers a long and prosperous life. In return, brothers give gifts and promise to protect their sisters. While similar to Raksha Bandhan, Bhai Dooj does not involve tying a Rakhi. The celebration is steeped in ancient Hindu traditions and stories, particularly those involving Lord Krishna and Yamraj, underscoring the eternal bond between siblings.
