Anubhav Sinha’s courtroom drama aims to spark dialogue on justice and accountability

February 8, 2026: Actors Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Kumud Mishra have spoken about their upcoming film Assi, which addresses the alarming rise in rape cases in India. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, the film is an investigative courtroom drama that explores the trauma of a rape survivor and the complex legal battle that follows. Kumud Mishra described Assi as a powerful and relevant thriller, adding that the team is travelling across cities to ensure the film reaches audiences beyond metros and sparks meaningful conversations.

Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, speaking during a promotional visit, called the film deeply important and urged people to watch it with their families and friends. Expressing his fondness for Varanasi, he said the film’s subject makes it necessary to take the message directly to people across the country. Both actors stressed that Assi is not just cinema, but a reflection of realities that society often chooses to ignore.

The film stars Taapsee Pannu in the lead role, alongside a strong ensemble cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Revathy, Kani Kusruti, Manoj Pahwa, Supriya Pathak and Seema Pahwa. The recently released trailer highlights an intense courtroom struggle for justice. Reflecting on the film, Taapsee said the story aims to ensure such crimes are never normalised. Assi, produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishnan Kumar and Anubhav Sinha, is slated for a worldwide theatrical release on February 20, 2026.
