‘Avengers’ Delayed: Marvel Pushes ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ to December 2026 and 2027

Disney delays its blockbuster Avengers installments amid a broader MCU strategy shift, with Robert Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom and a major theatrical gap looming in 2026.

The Avengers won’t be assembling as soon as expected.
Disney has officially delayed the release of its two highly anticipated Marvel Studios blockbusters — Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars — shifting both films to new December dates.

Originally slated for a May 1, 2026 release, Avengers: Doomsday will now premiere on December 18, 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars moves from May 7, 2027 to December 17, 2027. The announcement was part of a broader overhaul of Disney’s theatrical release calendar revealed Thursday afternoon.

In the reshuffle, several previously scheduled “Untitled Marvel” slots — including February 13, 2026, November 6, 2026, and November 5, 2027 — were either removed or rebranded as “Untitled Disney” projects. As a result, Doomsday and Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day now stand as the only Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) entries confirmed for a 2026 theatrical release.

Interestingly, both Avengers films now occupy the lucrative pre-holiday December window, famously used by Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021 — a box-office titan that grossed $1.9 billion globally.

A Major Content Gap Looms for Marvel Fans
The new release schedule means there will be no theatrical MCU release between The Fantastic 4: First Steps (July 25, 2025) and Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31, 2026). This year-long gap marks the longest break in Marvel’s theatrical timeline since the COVID-19 disruption between 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home and 2021’s Black Widow.

Disney has retained a few placeholder dates in 2028 (February 18, May 5, and November 10) for “Untitled Marvel” projects. Notably, announced films like Armor Wars and Blade still remain undated, leaving uncertainty around Marvel’s future pipeline.

Behind the Delay: A Shift in Strategy
This reduction in theatrical output aligns with Disney CEO Bob Iger’s recently stated goal to refocus Marvel Studios on quality over quantity. “Marvel lost a little focus by making too much,” Iger said during a recent investor call. “By consolidating and focusing more on films, we believe the quality will improve.”

What to Expect from ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’
Both upcoming Avengers films are shaping up to be massive cinematic events. Avengers: Doomsday will feature the highly anticipated return of Robert Downey Jr. — not as Iron Man, but in a new villainous role as Doctor Doom. The film is expected to bring together multiple Marvel factions, including characters from Thunderbolts, Fantastic 4: First Steps, and even surprise returns from the X-Men franchise, with actors like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen reportedly reprising their roles.

Production on Doomsday has recently picked up momentum, with Downey Jr. sharing a behind-the-scenes photo of himself and castmates attending a screening of Thunderbolts to support their fellow Marvel collaborators.

As Marvel Studios recalibrates its big-screen future, fans can expect more deliberate storytelling, fewer releases, and hopefully, a return to the blockbuster magic that defined the MCU’s earlier phases.
