Jeremy Renner is bravely recounting the terrifying 2023 snowplow accident that nearly took his life. In his newly released memoir My Next Breath, the Avengers star opens up about the catastrophic injuries he sustained and the profound impact the incident has had on his life.

The 54-year-old actor describes the horrific moment when he was crushed by a 14,000-pound snowplow while trying to stop it from sliding toward his nephew. “I could see my lifetime. I could see everything all at once,” Renner writes. “It could have been for ten seconds; could have been for five minutes. I know I died.”

Emergency medical technicians recorded Renner’s heart rate at just 18 beats per minute—effectively “basically dead,” he notes.

The Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation actor graphically details the extent of his injuries: “Six f–king wheels, seventy-six steel blades, 14,000 pounds of machine, all ranged against one human body. I hear all the bones crack … Skull, jaw, cheekbones, molars, fibula, tibia, lungs, eye sockets, cranium, pelvis, ulna, legs, arms, skin, crack, snap, crack, squeeze.”

Renner suffered 14 broken ribs, fractures to his spine, a punctured lung, a lacerated liver, and a horrifying injury that left his left eye “violently burst out” of his skull. “I could see my left eye with my right eye,” he chillingly recalls.

Despite the devastating injuries, Renner admits he has no regrets about risking his life to save his nephew. “I had to do something,” he writes. “In those lightning-fast seconds, his life hung in the balance. If that machine was to hit him, it would have crushed him to death, no question.”

Renner attributes the accident to a simple but monumental mistake—forgetting to set the snowplow’s parking brake. Even though the experience changed his life forever, he remains grateful for having survived.

My Next Breath offers a raw and emotional look into Renner’s recovery journey and the resilience it took to reclaim his life.
