Bangladeshi Actress Nusraat Faria Arrested at Dhaka Airport Over Attempted Murder Case Linked to 2024 Protests

May 18, 2025: Bangladeshi actress Nusraat Faria, widely recognized for her portrayal of Sheikh Hasina in the biographical film Mujib: The Making of a Nation, has been arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, according to multiple local media reports.

Faria was reportedly detained on Sunday while preparing to board a flight to Thailand. The arrest is linked to an attempted murder case stemming from anti-government protests in 2024. According to the Dhaka Tribune, a case was filed against 17 individuals, including several actors, in connection with the alleged attempted murder of a student during the July 2024 uprising in Dhaka’s Vatara area.

Inspector Sujan Haque of the Vatara Police Station confirmed the arrest, stating that the court had recently approved the case against the actress. “Our team went to the airport based on a tip-off from Immigration Police. She has now been formally shown as arrested in the case,” he said, as reported by bdnews24.com.

News outlet Prothom Alo reported that the arrest occurred at the airport’s immigration checkpoint early Sunday morning, just as the actress was set to depart the country.

Faria began her film career with the romantic drama Aashiqui (2015), opposite Ankush Hazra, which became a box office hit. She went on to star in several other commercially successful films such as Hero 420 (2016), Badsha – The Don (2016), Premi O Premi (2017), and Boss 2: Back to Rule (2017).

Her most notable role came in 2023, when she portrayed Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh’s current Prime Minister, in Mujib: The Making of a Nation. The film, a Bangladesh-India co-production directed by renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal, told the life story of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s founding father. Actor Arifin Shuvoo played the lead role of Mujib.

Reflecting on her casting in the historic role, Faria had previously expressed profound gratitude. “When I learnt of it, I felt like the luckiest person in my country,” she said in an interview with bdnews24.com. “Even if I never act again, playing her role is the ultimate achievement for me.”

As of now, the investigation into the alleged crime continues, and Faria’s legal team has not issued a public statement regarding the arrest.
