The actor opens up about privacy, love, and reconciling public life with personal differences after the end of his marriage to Lopez

Los Angeles, March 26: Ben Affleck is opening up about his recent divorce from Jennifer Lopez, shedding light on the complexities of love, fame, and maintaining privacy while living under the constant glare of the spotlight.

In his new GQ cover story released Tuesday, the Accountant 2 star reflected on his participation in Lopez’s Amazon Prime documentary Greatest Love Story Never Told, which chronicled their rekindled romance and eventual marriage—20 years after their first engagement.

Affleck, known for his reserved demeanor, admitted that navigating a relationship in the public eye has never been easy for him.

“There are a lot of people who I think have handled celebrity more adeptly than I have — Jennifer among them,” he said. “My temperament is to be a little bit more reserved and private than hers… And so I thought, ‘How do you reconcile that?’”

Despite their differing approaches to fame, Affleck emphasized his deep respect for Lopez and the bond they shared.

“You don’t marry a ship captain and then say, ‘Well, I don’t like going out in the water.’ You’ve got to own what you knew going into any relationship,” he said, highlighting the importance of accepting partners as they are.

He was clear that the documentary didn’t expose the reason behind their split:

“It’s not like you can watch that documentary and go, ‘Oh, now I understand the issues these two had.’ There’s no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue. It’s just two people trying to figure out their lives.”

Affleck stressed that breakups don’t always have a headline-making cause.

“The truth is much more ordinary than people would believe. It’s not one big moment—it’s just life. As you get older, it feels more like a couple’s therapy session than a drama.”

He also opened up about the vulnerability of sharing personal struggles.

“It’s kind of embarrassing. It feels raw. But I wanted to be honest—as long as my actual intentions and beliefs are communicated, I’m okay with that,” he said.

Affleck and Lopez first became engaged in 2002 during their early 2000s romance, famously starring together in Gigli and Jersey Girl. The pair split before marrying but rekindled their relationship in 2021, eventually marrying in Las Vegas and holding a larger ceremony in Georgia in 2022.

However, according to People, Lopez filed for divorce on August 20, 2024—two years to the day after their formal ceremony. The date of separation was listed as April 26.

Lopez had previously spoken candidly about their relationship and emotional journey. In an Interview magazine feature, she described her recent year as emotionally turbulent:

“It was like my whole f***ing world exploded… When your whole house blows up, you’re standing there in the rubble going, ‘How do I not ever let that happen again?’”

Though the relationship has come to an end, both Affleck and Lopez have continued to express mutual respect and love, even as they navigate the aftermath in the public eye.
