Bhagyashree Criticises ‘Uncomfortable Intimacy’ in Modern Films, Says Bold Stories Don’t Need Excess

Actor Bhagyashree, who became an overnight sensation with Maine Pyaar Kiya, has shared her views on how Hindi cinema has evolved since the 1990s. In a recent interaction, she said that while storytelling has become more diverse and realistic, the growing depiction of explicit intimacy in films often feels unnecessary.

Reflecting on the difference between the 90s and today, Bhagyashree noted that cinema was once a primary source of family entertainment. With the rise of multiple platforms and changing family dynamics, audiences today are fragmented across genres and niches.

However, she expressed concern about what she described as “intimacy that makes you squirm” when watching films with family. According to her, bold and meaningful stories can be told without pushing boundaries that feel uncomfortable or defiant towards societal sensibilities.

She also addressed the changing space for women in cinema. In the 90s, she said, female actors often stepped away from films after marriage due to industry norms shaped by patriarchal narratives. Today, with greater awareness and support, especially from families and spouses, more women continue their careers after marriage.

A Look Back at Her Career

Bhagyashree debuted opposite Salman Khan in Maine Pyaar Kiya (1989) and went on to appear in films like Paayal and Ghar Aaya Mera Pardesi before taking a break from the industry. She later returned with projects such as Thalaivii and Radhe Shyam, earning praise for her performances in recent years.
