April 6, 2025: Bill Murray has recently spoken out about the on-set incident that led to the indefinite suspension of his film Being Mortal, which made headlines in 2022. The film, which was to be directed by Aziz Ansari, was halted after an accusation of inappropriate behavior against the legendary comedian.

In a candid interview with The New York Times, Murray shared his side of the story, admitting that he had kissed a female co-star through a mask during a scene. He described the moment as something that he thought was light-hearted and funny, explaining, “It wasn’t like I touched her, but it was just, I gave her a kiss, and she was wearing a mask.” He further revealed that it wasn’t the first time he had done something similar, and believed it had always been received as a harmless joke in the past.

Murray explained the incident took place during the COVID-19 pandemic when everyone was wearing masks, and the crew was in a confined space. However, he acknowledged that the situation was blown out of proportion, and what he considered a light-hearted gesture became the focus of a complaint. “It turned out there were pre-existing conditions and all this kind of stuff. I’m like, what? How was anyone supposed to know anything like that?” he said.

The actor also expressed his frustration with the way the situation was handled, criticizing the arbitration process that followed. “It went to this lunatic arbitration, which, if anyone ever suggests you go to arbitration: Don’t do it. Never ever do it. Because you think it’s justice, and it isn’t,” Murray remarked.

Despite the controversy, Murray still believes that his actions were misunderstood and continues to find humor in the incident. “It was a great disappointment because I thought I knew someone, and I did not. I certainly thought it was light. I thought it was funny. To me, it’s still funny, the idea that you could give someone a kiss with a mask on,” he concluded.

The incident resulted in production on Being Mortal being indefinitely suspended, with Murray’s alleged misconduct leading to a review of the on-set dynamics. Although the film was halted, it was later reported that the film’s team would move forward with the project, though not without controversy surrounding the situation.

On a positive note, Murray’s upcoming film The Friend, directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, is slated for release soon. The film follows Naomi Watts as Iris, a New York City writer whose life takes an unexpected turn when she inherits a Great Dane from her late mentor.

As for Being Mortal, its future remains uncertain as the team navigates the aftermath of the incident.
