BLACKPINK’s Jisoo Excited for Upcoming Zombie Drama Newtopia

K-pop star shares insights on her unique role and the series’ fresh take on the zombie genre

Los Angeles [US], February 7: BLACKPINK star Jisoo is gearing up for the release of her highly anticipated drama, Newtopia, which blends action, romance, and a thrilling zombie outbreak in Seoul. The series, directed by Yoon Sung-hyun, marks Jisoo’s latest acting project and is set to premiere globally on Prime Video and Korean streamer Coupang Play this Friday, Variety reported.

A Unique Zombie Thriller with a Twist

The show follows Lee Jae-yoon (played by Park Jung-min), a late military conscript, and Kang Young-joo (played by Jisoo), a rookie professional, whose relationship is first tested by a breakup—and later by a zombie outbreak in Seoul. The drama aims to stand out by mixing heart-pounding action with light-hearted romance.

Speaking about her experience working on the show, Jisoo expressed excitement over its fresh approach to the zombie genre.

“During the pre-production phase, they showed us some prototypes of the zombies, and many of them were unlike anything I had ever seen before,” Jisoo revealed in a press note.

“I haven’t had a chance to see how they translated onto the screen yet, so I’m very curious,” she added.

A Fresh Take on Zombies

Jisoo believes Newtopia will intrigue audiences with its unique zombie designs and an unconventional tone.

“I think it will be fun for viewers to compare how different Newtopia is from other zombie series or films. Some of the zombies don’t resemble humans at all and look quite unique, so I think a lot of viewers will go, ‘Oh, I never imagined zombies could be designed this way.’ “

She further praised the series for balancing action with humor, offering audiences lighthearted moments amidst the chaos.

“I love this series for not getting too serious when featuring zombies. Whenever situations or emotions start to feel heavy, different characters take turns breaking the grave mood. We have many moments when characters turn a situation into something funny, giving the audience a chance to laugh,” she explained.

Jisoo believes this blend of suspense and humor is Newtopia’s greatest strength.

“Viewers can have fun without having to feel weighed down,” she said.

Global Premiere on Prime Video

Fans worldwide won’t have to wait long to see Jisoo’s latest performance. Newtopia will be available for streaming globally on Prime Video and Coupang Play in South Korea starting Friday.
