Box Office Blockbuster Domestically: Minecraft Movie Rakes in $200 Million in 5 Days, Surpasses Sonic 2
April 14, 2025: Warner Bros.’ A Minecraft Movie is rewriting the rules of video game adaptations. In just five days of release, the film has crossed $200.3 million at the domestic box office, overtaking Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and gearing up to surpass Sonic 3‘s $236 million mark by this Sunday.
Starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, and directed by Jared Hess, the film added $7.1 million on Thursday alone, registering the third-biggest Thursday for a video game-based film—trailing only behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Despite mixed reviews, the PG-rated family adventure has captured the imagination of kids, gamers, and nostalgic millennials alike. With its visually stunning pixelated world and a high-energy story following four teens navigating Minecraft’s blocky universe, the film continues to show strong weekday holds—down just 8.5% from Wednesday.
The film features voice performances from Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen, alongside VFX contributions from Weta FX, Sony Pictures Imageworks, and Digital Domain. With impressive visuals and strong word-of-mouth, it has become a family favorite despite theater warnings over rowdy audiences.
If projections hold, Minecraft will soon become the second-highest-grossing video game movie of all time in the U.S. Could a Roblox adaptation be next to ride the game-to-screen wave?
