Box Office Report: Kajol’s Maa Earns $3 Million Worldwide, Trails Behind Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par

Despite positive reviews, Maa closes its first weekend at $3M globally, falling short of Sitaare Zameen Par’s $23.5M haul by second weekend.

July-2, 2025: The new Hindi horror drama Maa, starring Kajol, wrapped up its first weekend with a worldwide collection of $3 million, but fell behind last week’s blockbuster, Sitaare Zameen Par. Directed by Devgn Films and released on June 27, Maa has seen consistent growth in collections, albeit at a slower pace compared to its competition.

On opening day, Maa earned nearly $700,000 in India, with a global opening close to $800,000. Strong word-of-mouth and favorable reviews helped the film grow over the weekend. By the end of Day 2, it had collected $1.5 million in India and $1.7 million worldwide, ultimately closing Sunday with $2.5 million in India and a global tally of $3 million.

In contrast, Aamir Khan’s sports drama Sitaare Zameen Par continued its dominant run. After a record-breaking opening last week, the film held strong throughout the weekdays and added another $10 million during its second weekend alone. Directed by RS Prasanna and based on the Spanish film Campeones, it has now reached a total of $23.5 million worldwide in just two weekends.

Released alongside Maa and Kannappa (starring Akshay Kumar and Vishnu Manchu), Sitaare Zameen Par remains a box office heavyweight, continuing to draw in audiences even in its second week.

While Maa may have found favor with critics, it still faces an uphill battle at the box office amid stiff competition from well-established crowd-pullers.
