Box Office Report: ‘Metro In Dino’ Collects This Much on Day-1

Anurag Basu’s spiritual sequel to Life In A Metro struggles at the box office despite star power and nostalgia; weekend crucial for recovery

July-5, 2025: Anurag Basu’s much-anticipated Metro In Dino, the spiritual sequel to his acclaimed 2007 film Life In A Metro, hit theatres on July 4, 2025, but failed to make a significant splash on its opening day. Despite a talented ensemble cast—Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi, and Konkona Sen Sharma—the film managed to collect just ₹3.35 crore on Day 1, according to early estimates.

With an average occupancy of 17.99% across India, the film’s performance was uneven throughout the day. Morning shows saw a mere 8.64% turnout, while night shows peaked at 31.09%, indicating a late surge in interest. The film performed best in metro cities like Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Pune, and Bengaluru, especially during the evening and night shows.

Box Office Battle and Budget Pressure

Despite a better start than Life In A Metro, which opened at ₹87 lakh in 2007, Metro In Dino faces stiff competition from Kajol’s Maa, Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par, Brad Pitt’s F1, and Scarlett Johansson’s Jurassic World: Rebirth.

The film has been mounted on a budget of ₹100 crore—₹85 crore in production and ₹15 crore on promotions. Initially planned at ₹65 crore, costs ballooned due to reshoots and production delays.

Thankfully, the producers have already recovered around ₹70 crore through non-theatrical deals, including digital, music, and satellite rights. But to break even, Metro In Dino must now gross at least ₹75 crore worldwide, including a theatrical share of ₹30 crore.

Can Weekend Turn the Tide?

While the modest opening poses challenges, the coming weekend is critical for the film’s survival at the box office. Positive word-of-mouth and strong performances in urban pockets could help the film recover some ground.

Whether Metro In Dino can carve its own identity and emulate the cult status of Life In A Metro remains to be seen. For now, it’s an uphill climb for Anurag Basu’s latest urban tale.
