May 23, 2025: After a turbulent build-up filled with controversies and legal hurdles, Bhool Chuk Maaf, starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, has finally hit theatres. While the sci-fi romantic comedy had built early buzz with a well-received trailer, its box office fate now appears uncertain following a series of setbacks.

The film found itself at the center of drama when, in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, the makers attempted to shift its release from theatres to a direct OTT debut. This move was challenged by multiplex chains and eventually halted by a Bombay High Court order mandating a theatrical release. The controversy dampened public sentiment and fueled rumors that poor pre-release ticket sales were behind the decision.

A Rough Start Expected

Early indicators don’t bode well. With low awareness among the general audience and uninspiring advance booking figures, the film seems heavily reliant on strong word-of-mouth to gain momentum over the weekend.

Trade analysts predict that Bhool Chuk Maaf is likely to earn between ₹3.50 crore to ₹4.50 crore net on its opening day in India. While not disastrous, it’s far from the explosive start expected from a Maddock Films release—especially when compared to the studio’s recent hit Chhaava, which opened to ₹33.10 crore net.

Maddock Films’ Reputation Might Help

One glimmer of hope lies in the production house’s track record. Maddock Films has enjoyed a strong post-pandemic run, building a loyal audience that could still turn out for Bhool Chuk Maaf if reviews are favorable.

Minimal Competition in Theatres

Another advantage for the film is the lack of serious box office competition. The other new releases this week, Kesari Veer and Kapkapiii, have released with little to no buzz, potentially giving Bhool Chuk Maaf a slight edge.

Whether the film can overcome its rocky start and capitalize on word-of-mouth remains to be seen, but the opening day will be a critical indicator of its theatrical prospects.
