July 11, 2025: Buzzfeed is facing intense backlash after a now-deleted Instagram post from its Tasty account suggested that Love Island Season 7 frontrunner Chelley deserved a “knuckle sandwich for breakfast” — a remark widely criticized as a veiled reference to domestic violence with racial undertones.
While Chelley remains in the Love Island villa, her family and friends — who are managing her social media accounts — took to Instagram Stories to call out the post. In a strongly worded statement, Team Chelley wrote: “The slide dedicated to Chelley’s breakfast was not breakfast, but violence… hinting at domestic violence.”

They explained that in the Love Island villa, men typically prepare breakfast for the women, making the violent implication behind the edited image of a “knuckle sandwich” especially disturbing. “It is not only disturbing, disgusting, and unacceptable. It is the harsh reality that implicit biases can be rooted in anti-Blackness, misogyny, prejudice, and violence,” the statement continued.
Buzzfeed had initially apologized in a follow-up post, admitting the attempt at humor “landed with racial tones that we didn’t intend,” but both the offensive post and apology were later deleted — which only fueled the outrage further.
Team Chelley and fans alike are now demanding a formal, public apology.“No person deserves that — not Chelley or any of the Islanders,” her team added. “The parties responsible must take accountability and commit to change.”
Fans have since taken to Buzzfeed’s recent unrelated posts to demand action, writing comments like:
- “YOU OWE CHELLEY AND HER FAMILY AN APOLOGY!!!”
- “Screenshots are forever.”
- “We’re not forgetting this.”
Chelley, a standout contestant on the show, has won over many viewers. Her supporters say the viral post undermined not just her image but sent a harmful message to young Black women who admire her.“Let’s not allow this incident foster additional footprints of hate but digital footprints of love,” Team Chelley concluded.
