Can Nicole Kidman Chilling Return as Masha Top Season 1?

June 12, 2025: Nicole Kidman is back as Masha Dmitrichenko in Season 2 of Nine Perfect Strangers, and this time, the story takes a darker, colder turn—both emotionally and geographically.

Speaking to People, Kidman opened up about filming the second season of the psychological drama, which swapped the sun-drenched Australian coast for the snowy Austrian Alps. “I love the Austrian Alps,” Kidman said. “There’s something so invigorating about being outside in that cold, authentic environment. It brought something raw and real to the performances.”

Unlike Season 1, which was based on Liane Moriarty’s novel, the second installment is a fresh narrative, giving creators and cast more room to experiment. “It was a whole new landscape — the whole thing was up for grabs,” Kidman explained. “That’s why in episode five, it’s the origin story. You get to see more of Masha’s past and why she is who she is.”

That origin story includes a major reveal: Masha’s complicated relationship with David Sharpe (played by Mark Strong), the father of her deceased daughter. Kidman, who also serves as a producer on the series, called the storytelling “thrilling,” especially as she got to speak in Russian and Czech.

Strong added that he hopes viewers feel “taken somewhere special” while watching. He also noted the beauty of shooting in places like Salzburg and Munich. Though filming for nearly six months in the winter had its challenges, both actors agree the natural environment deeply influenced their performances.

Kidman’s family — husband Keith Urban and daughters Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret — joined her during the shoot. “They were skiing while I was working,” she said. “I’m fortunate my family can travel and adapt, so we stay together.”

Strong, who also had his children visit on set, echoed her sentiment: “It’s not ideal being away for months, but being together — and with skiing involved — made it special.”

With more character arcs yet to unfold and Masha’s unpredictable nature driving the plot, Kidman hints at a slow, emotional unraveling ahead. “It’s a beautiful, long slow burn,” Strong concluded.
