Cannes Classics 2025: Quentin Tarantino Honored, George Sherman Tribute Leads Star-Studded Line-Up

May 7, 2025: The 2025 Cannes Classics program promises a rich celebration of cinema’s legacy, with acclaimed filmmaker Quentin Tarantino named as this year’s Guest of Honor. The director will present a special tribute to American filmmaker George Sherman, highlighting his influence on Western cinema with screenings of Red Canyon and Comanche Territory—two of Sherman’s standout works for Universal Pictures.

Tarantino, a Cannes mainstay and Palme d’Or winner for Pulp Fiction, will take part in a conversation moderated by film critic and documentarian Elvis Mitchell, offering audiences a unique deep dive into Sherman’s contributions to American genre filmmaking.

The Cannes Classics program opens with a special screening of Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush, marking its 100th anniversary, setting the tone for a selection of restored masterpieces, retrospectives, and anniversary celebrations.

One of the highlights is the 25th anniversary screening of Amores perros, with director Alejandro G. Iñárritu attending. The festival will also mark the 50th anniversary of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, a defining work in modern American cinema.

Actor Shia LaBeouf will attend with Slauson Rec, a documentary by Leo Lewis O’Neil that captures LaBeouf’s community acting initiative in South Central Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Kevin Smith returns to Cannes with Dogma: Resurrected – A 25th Anniversary Celebration!, commemorating his provocative 1999 film.

The 2025 line-up includes a mix of new documentaries, international classics, and restored prints. Notable entries include Edward Yang’s Yi Yi, John Woo’s Hard Boiled, and Satyajit Ray’s Days and Nights in the Forest in newly restored formats.
