Carrie-Anne Moss Reflects On Stepping Back From Hollywood After The Matrix To Focus On Motherhood

Date:

March 13, 2025: Actress Carrie-Anne Moss has opened up about her decision to step back from major movie offers after the global success of The Matrix trilogy to focus on motherhood and prioritize her family. In an interview with The Independent, Moss revealed that, while she was presented with incredible opportunities following the success of the iconic 1999 action film and its sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, she felt that the most important thing at that time was to be present for her children.

Reflecting on her career choices, Moss shared, “After The Matrix was such a big deal, I took a big, big break to have children and be with them. I remember being torn, having a little twinge like ‘Gosh, I’m getting offered such great things. That would be such a huge deal.’ And I was holding my baby in my arms, and I remember thinking, ‘At the end of my life, will it matter to me that I have another movie on my resume? Or will it matter to me that I held my baby?’ And I instantly thought, no. It was just a no-brainer. And I’m so glad I did that. I’m so glad I don’t have that regret.”

Moss is best known for her portrayal of Trinity in The Matrix films, alongside Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne. However, after the trilogy, she chose to step away from the limelight for a period to dedicate herself to her family, a decision she doesn’t regret. Moss further reflected on how she cherished her time away from the industry, saying it allowed her to create meaningful memories with her children.

In 2021, Moss reprised her iconic role in The Matrix Resurrections, but the film didn’t perform well at the box office, partly due to Warner Bros.’s simultaneous release strategy of airing films on streaming platforms like HBO Max alongside their theatrical release. Despite this, Moss expressed that she didn’t let the film’s disappointing reception affect her. “They put it on some streaming platform [HBO Max]. But I really don’t spend too much time thinking about what people think of things. I’ve always said this, and it’s kind of cliche, but you only have control over your own experience. That film was really such a gift, and I loved making it,” Moss shared.

In addition to her return to The Matrix universe, Moss also starred in the Marvel series Jessica Jones and made her recent appearance as a Jedi in the Star Wars series The Acolyte. Her career continues to be a balance of significant roles and personal fulfillment, with the actress expressing no regrets about her decisions.
