Chinese Animated Blockbuster 'Ne Zha 2' Expands to Europe After Record-Breaking Success
Beijing/London, March 11: China’s animated mega-blockbuster Ne Zha 2 is making its way to European cinemas, following its record-breaking success at the Chinese box office.
Distributor Trinity CineAsia has secured theatrical rights to the film from Beijing Enlight Media for 37 territories across Europe, including the U.K., Germany, France, Spain, and more. The film will debut in the U.K. and Ireland on March 21, with preview screenings beginning on March 14. A wider European rollout will follow soon after, the distributor confirmed.
Since its Chinese New Year release in January, Ne Zha 2 has rewritten history, grossing a staggering $2.06 billion at the domestic box office—surpassing Pixar’s ‘Inside Out 2’, which has amassed $1.7 billion worldwide. The film has also made an impact in North America, earning $18.8 million since its February 14 debut—an impressive feat considering most Chinese animated films struggle to gain traction in Western markets.
Ne Zha 2 is a sequel to the 2019 hit film Ne Zha, which was previously China’s highest-grossing animated film. The story is inspired by Chinese mythology and a famous 16th-century novel, continuing the saga of the underdog hero Ne Zha as he battles against corrupt gods and demons in his quest for justice.
Director Yang Yu (Jiaozi) returns to helm the film, with Beijing Enlight Media enlisting an estimated 4,000 animators to bring the ambitious project to life.
“Rarely do you get a film that truly defines an era, showcases the power of cinema, and leaves an indelible mark on culture—this is ‘Ne Zha 2’,” said Cedric Behrel, managing director of Trinity CineAsia.
The European release of Ne Zha 2 represents a major expansion for Trinity CineAsia, which has been steadily building its portfolio of Chinese films across the continent. The company previously distributed Hong Kong action hit ‘Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In’ and Cannes award-winner ‘Black Dog’.
“After years of cultivating audiences and strengthening our relationships with exhibitors and the press, this marks a milestone for Trinity CineAsia in bringing Chinese cinema to a much larger European audience,” Behrel added.
With its visually stunning animation, rich cultural heritage, and record-breaking success, Ne Zha 2 is set to become a defining moment for Chinese animation on the global stage.
