Chris Evans Practiced Portuguese All Week Before Proposing to Alba

June 9, 2025: Nearly two years after tying the knot with actress Alba Baptista, Chris Evans is finally sharing some intimate details about the moment he popped the question. The couple, who got married in September 2023 at their Boston home, have kept much of their relationship private — but at the recent New York City premiere of Materialists, Chris opened up about his romantic and somewhat nerve-wracking proposal.

In an interview on the red carpet with The Knot, the 43-year-old actor revealed that he learned Portuguese specifically to propose to Alba, who is Portuguese herself. “I proposed – maybe I shouldn’t even be saying this. I proposed to my now-wife in Portuguese,” Chris shared. He explained how he had been practicing the phrase “Will you marry me?” all week leading up to the moment.

The preparation almost got the best of him, as Chris joked about nearly “letting the cat out of the bag” while making breakfast with Alba. “I had practiced it so much that I’d almost start saying it out loud and then think, ‘Oh God, that’s not just a song stuck in my head,’” he laughed.

Despite the nerves, Chris went ahead with the proposal — though he admits he might have “screwed it up” a little. “But I still know it!” he said with a smile.

The couple’s romance first became public in late 2022 when they were spotted holding hands in Central Park. Since then, they’ve kept their relationship mostly under the radar, making their red carpet debut together at the 2024 Vanity Fair Oscar Party.

On the work front, Chris is currently promoting Materialists, a romantic comedy starring Dakota Johnson and Pedro Pascal, directed by Celine Song. The film is set to release on June 13. He’s also working on Honey Don’t!, a detective comedy directed by Ethan Coen, due out this August.

When asked about future plans beyond acting, Chris expressed excitement about the idea of becoming a dad someday, calling it “an exciting” title he’d love to take on.
