Filmmaker Christopher Nolan has revealed that his path to directing Batman Begins and, eventually, his upcoming epic The Odyssey, was paved by a job he originally landed and then lost: directing the film Troy.
In an interview with Empire Magazine, Nolan detailed how the seeds for his interest in mythological epics were sown over 20 years ago.
🔙 The Troy Connection
- Initial Hire: Nolan was hired by Warner Bros. to direct Troy when filmmaker Wolfgang Petersen temporarily stepped aside from the project.
- Petersen’s Return: Petersen, who had developed the project, returned to claim it after the studio decided not to move forward with his superhero movie, Batman Vs Superman. This closed the window for Nolan.
- Nolan’s Interest: Despite the brief opportunity, Nolan said he was immediately drawn to the material, recalling specific images he wanted to explore, such as “How I wanted to handle the Trojan horse.”
🦇 The “Consolation Prize”
After losing Troy, Warner Bros. shifted Nolan to a project they considered a lower priority at the time: Batman Begins.
- Nolan’s View: Nolan candidly referred to the Batman Begins assignment as a “consolation prize.”
- The Result: That “consolation” turned into The Dark Knight Trilogy (starting with Batman Begins in 2005), which redefined the superhero genre and established Nolan as a globally successful blockbuster director.
🔱 Circling Back to The Odyssey
Nolan is now returning to the world of classic mythology with his upcoming film, The Odyssey, based on Homer’s epic poem.
- Motivation: Nolan stated that as a filmmaker, he is “looking for gaps in cinematic culture.” He believes this type of mythological epic has not been done with the necessary weight and scale:”I’d never seen that done with the sort of weight and credibility that an A-budget and a big Hollywood, IMAX production could do,” he said.
- Cast: The ensemble cast features major stars, including Matt Damon (as Odysseus), Tom Holland (as Telemachus), Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal.
- Release: The Odyssey is set for release by Universal on July 17, 2026.
Troy was eventually released in 2004, starring Brad Pitt, and despite mixed reviews, it grossed nearly $500 million worldwide.
