Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey Recast: Why Did the Lead Drop Out?
July 07, 2025: Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated film The Odyssey has hit a casting bump, with one of its original stars stepping away due to scheduling conflicts.
Just a week after the first teaser for the Oppenheimer director’s next epic began screening in select cinemas, it has been confirmed that Cosmo Jarvis, best known for his Emmy-nominated performance as John Blackthorne in Shōgun, has exited the project.
Jarvis has been replaced by Logan Marshall-Green, known for his roles in Prometheus and Upgrade. While the character originally assigned to Jarvis remains undisclosed, Marshall-Green’s addition maintains the film’s impressive lineup.
Nolan’s The Odyssey stars Matt Damon as the legendary hero Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, who embarks on a treacherous journey home following the Trojan War. The film promises epic battles with mythological monsters, gods, and otherworldly threats, consistent with Homer’s original 8th-century BCE narrative.

The ensemble cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, and Charlize Theron.
Filming is partially taking place in Sicily, notably on the island of Favignana, part of the Egadi archipelago. Scholars believe this area inspired sections of Homer’s epic, where Odysseus and his crew allegedly landed, hunted for food, and roasted goats.
True to Nolan’s style, the teaser for The Odyssey is currently exclusive to cinemas, screening ahead of Jurassic World: Rebirth. There is no confirmed date for an online release, with the director known for preferring a traditional theatrical experience for his trailers.
