Colin Farrell Talks Future Of ‘The Penguin’ Season 2, Says “I’m in No Rush”

February 25, 2025: Colin Farrell, who recently took home a Screen Actors Guild Award for his role in The Penguin, has given fans an update on the possibility of a second season of the hit crime drama series. While many fans have been eagerly waiting for the next chapter of the story, Farrell revealed that he isn’t currently rushing into it.

Speaking backstage at the SAG Awards, Farrell explained his stance on the potential continuation of the series: “I don’t want it. I don’t not want it. We all left it in the ring in those eight hours. I would hate to, just because of a quote-unquote success, have to go again and for it to be a diluted version of what people seem to feel it is, majoritively. So I’m in no rush. I have no deep desire to do it,” he said.

Farrell, who portrays the notorious supervillain Penguin in the series, opened up about his experience playing such an iconic character, which is part of Gotham’s dark and twisted world. He admitted that he still can’t believe he’s been given the chance to portray one of the most famous villains of the Batman universe. “I was six, seven, eight or nine, watching Meredith Burgess as the Penguin on Batman,” Farrell shared. “If you would have told that six-, seven- or eight-, nine-year-old, ‘You’re going to play that character someday. And you know the Michael Jackson ‘Thriller’ video? You’re going to have the makeup done by a student of the guy, Rick Baker, who did that makeup on Michael Jackson.’ It’s just madness. So these moments are beautiful. I’m very grateful for them. And this show has been extraordinarily thrilling.”

Despite his uncertainty regarding a second season, Farrell remains open to returning if the storyline aligns well with Matt Reeves’ cinematic universe. He added, “Sure, if they think of something that works in conjunction as a parallel to Matt Reeves’ cinematic universe and it’s a good idea, I’m open to it. But it’s not something concerning me.”

Fans will also be excited to hear that Farrell is expected to reprise his role as Oswald Cobblepot in the upcoming sequel to The Batman, though he revealed that Reeves has not shared any details about his involvement yet. “He keeps his cards to his chest,” Farrell said, keeping the mystery around his future role.

The Penguin has been lauded for its thrilling portrayal of the crime-filled underworld of Gotham, and Farrell’s nuanced portrayal of the character has only added to the series’ acclaim. While the future of the series is still uncertain, fans are undoubtedly looking forward to seeing where this fascinating villain’s story will go next.
