Criminal Investigation Launched into Sexual Assault Allegations Against Singer Smokey Robinson

May 16, 2025: A criminal investigation is now underway into sexual assault allegations made against legendary Motown singer-songwriter Smokey Robinson, according to confirmations from his attorneys and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, as reported by Variety.

The investigation follows a civil lawsuit filed last week by four anonymous women—identified as Jane Does—who were formerly employed as housekeepers by Robinson and his wife, Frances Robinson, between 2006 and 2024. The women have accused Robinson of sexual battery, assault, and false imprisonment, and are seeking no less than USD 50 million in damages through a jury trial.

In a statement issued to Variety, the Sheriff’s Department confirmed:
“The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Victims Bureau is actively investigating criminal allegations involving William Robinson AKA ‘Smokey Robinson.’ The investigation is in the early stages, and we have no further comment.”

Robinson’s legal team responded strongly, stating:
“Plaintiffs filed a police report only after they filed a $50 million lawsuit. This means only that the police are now required to investigate. We welcome that investigation… Exposure to the truth is a powerful thing.”
The statement further accused the plaintiffs of attempting to manipulate public opinion and insisted the allegations were part of a “manufactured lawsuit” aimed at tarnishing the couple’s reputation for financial gain.\

In addition to the sexual misconduct allegations, the plaintiffs claim Frances Robinson contributed to a hostile work environment, allegedly using racially offensive language and ignoring prior misconduct complaints, including settlements from other women.

The case has sparked intense media interest, given Smokey Robinson’s iconic status in American music history. Known for hits like “Cruisin’”, “Tracks of My Tears”, and as the former frontman of The Miracles, Robinson has long been regarded as one of the pioneers of soul and R&B.
