February 19, 2025: Actor and singer Cynthia Erivo is set to portray Jesus Christ this summer in a special production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl. The musical, by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, will run from August 1 to August 3, with casting details to be announced later. Erivo shared her excitement about the role on Instagram, writing, “Just a little busy this Summer, can’t wait.”
This marks a significant return to the show for Erivo, who previously starred as Mary Magdalene in an all-female version of the iconic musical in 2020. During that performance, she delivered a powerful rendition of the song “I Don’t Know How to Love Him.” Now, Erivo will step into the role of Jesus Christ, which will showcase her incredible range as an actor and singer.

The production will be directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Sergio Trujillo, while Tony Award winner Stephen Oremus will serve as musical director and conductor. Jesus Christ Superstar first premiered as a concept album before making its Broadway debut in 1971. The rock opera tells the story of the final week of Jesus’ life, offering a modern and musical interpretation of biblical events.
This new performance at the Hollywood Bowl is just one of Erivo’s many high-profile projects. She’s also been nominated for an Oscar for her role in Wicked, a film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical. The Wicked movie has already earned substantial box office success, grossing USD 709.9 million worldwide. Erivo plays Elphaba, while Ariana Grande stars as Glinda, both key roles in this reimagining of The Wizard of Oz. The highly anticipated Wicked: For Good will hit theaters on November 21, 2025.
