David Fincher To Direct ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’ Sequel With Brad Pitt Returning As Cliff Booth

April 3, 2025: David Fincher will be taking the helm for a sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-winning film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, according to a report by Variety. The sequel will see Brad Pitt reprise his role as the stuntman and potentially deadly wife-killer, Cliff Booth, a character that earned Pitt an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

In a surprising turn of events, the sequel will not be released in theaters but will instead be available for streaming on Netflix. This marks a significant shift in the way high-profile films are being distributed, as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was originally released by Sony Pictures in 2019. Tarantino, however, had negotiated a deal that would return him ownership of the film’s underlying copyright after a certain period, paving the way for the sequel’s streaming debut.

The decision for a follow-up comes after Tarantino scrapped plans for his allegedly final 10th film, The Movie Critic. This project was rumored to focus on a film critic who worked for a porn magazine during the ’70s. While it was speculated that Brad Pitt’s Cliff Booth might be involved in some capacity, those rumors have now been confirmed. The official announcement reunites Pitt with Fincher, who had previously worked together on iconic films like Se7en, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

As for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood‘s other stars, it’s reported that Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie may not be returning for the sequel, though there is still no official word.

The collaboration between Fincher and Tarantino for this unique project is generating major buzz, as it marks the first time that one acclaimed director is taking over a sequel to a film by another. With a star-studded cast and the creative synergy between Tarantino and Fincher, this sequel is poised to be one of the most anticipated releases in Hollywood in the coming years.

Fans of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood can look forward to revisiting the world of Cliff Booth, albeit in a new and thrilling format, when the sequel hits Netflix.
