Delhi HC Upholds Karisma Kapoor Children’s Right to Scrutinize Father’s Assets

In an ongoing marital dispute, the Delhi High Court stated Karisma Kapoor’s children are entitled to “question” the asset disclosure of their father, industrialist Sunjay Kapur, ensuring their financial interests are protected.

September 25, 2025: On Thursday, the Delhi High Court asked Priya Sachdeva Kapur, the widow of the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, why she wanted to file a sealed list of his personal assets and debts. The application is part of a partition suit brought by Sunjay Kapur’s two children with his ex-wife, actress Karisma Kapoor. They want a piece of his assets.

Priya Kapur’s lawyer, Sheyl Trehan, told Justice Jyoti Singh that the sealed cover was needed to keep sensitive financial information, like bank and Demat account details, from getting out to the media. Trehan said that there had been a lot of media coverage and that pleas were getting out, which was a concern to cybersecurity. She suggested that everyone concerned be given the information with the promise that it would be kept secret.

Justice Singh did not instantly approve the request, though. He said verbally that the list of assets must be made public in a partition litigation. The court questioned the unusual circumstances of the case and said that in any such suit, the beneficiaries have the right to query the assets that were revealed. The court remarked, “If they have to prove it tomorrow and are part of a confidentiality club, how will they defend this case?”

The lawyer for Karisma Kapoor’s kids didn’t want the sealed cover request to go through because they were worried it would make it harder for them to challenge the will later on. The lawyer also told the court that they knew a lot of money had been “wiped off” of Sunjay Kapur’s bank accounts, which made the demand for full disclosure even stronger.

After Sunjay Kapur died in June, there was a fight over the multi-crore estate. Samaira and Kiaan Raj Kapur, his children, launched the partition litigation. They have also questioned the validity of a will that their father supposedly signed, saying it is “forged” and “fabricated.”

The court has set a date for the case to be heard on Friday, September 26. It has also urged Priya Kapur’s lawyer to come up with a solution that will make everyone happy. There has been a lot of talk in Indian courts about “sealed cover jurisprudence.” Critics say it can make things less clear and go against the idea of a fair trial.
