Delhi HC Urges Kapur Family to Seek Mediation

Court flags bitter inheritance battle over Sunjay Kapur’s ₹30,000 crore estate

February 10, 2026: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday expressed concern over the intensifying legal dispute within the Kapur family over the vast fortune left behind by late industrialist Sunjay Kapur. Calling the public courtroom battle “deeply unfortunate,” the court urged the warring parties to step back and consider mediation instead of prolonging a bitter legal fight. The dispute involves Sunjay Kapur’s mother Rani Kapur and his third wife Priya Kapur, with the court remarking that such immense wealth should ideally benefit the entire family rather than fuel prolonged litigation.

The court made these observations while hearing a civil suit filed by Rani Kapur, who has challenged the legality of the RK Family Trust, allegedly created in October 2017. She has sought to have the trust declared illegal and fraudulent, claiming her assets were transferred without her informed consent during a period of grief and vulnerability following her son’s death. The High Court criticised the “washing of dirty linen in public” and urged all stakeholders, including Sunjay Kapur’s second wife Karisma Kapoor and their children, to explore reconciliation through mediation.

Sunjay Kapur died at the age of 53 in June last year while playing polo in London, with his death officially attributed to cardiac arrest. However, Rani Kapur has raised serious questions, even hinting at a wider conspiracy. She has also alleged that after suffering a stroke in 2017, her dependence on her son and Priya Kapur was exploited to divert her assets into the trust. As the legal battle deepens, the High Court’s remarks underline growing judicial discomfort with the family dispute spilling into the public domain.
