Directed by Malayalam filmmaker Rosshan Andrrews, Deva marks his Hindi debut and is a remake of his 2013 Malayalam hit Mumbai Police starring Prithviraj Sukumaran.
In Deva, Shahid Kapoor plays ACP Dev Ambre, a sharp yet troubled cop who loses his memory while investigating his best friend’s murder. Pooja Hegde stars as his partner and love interest, Diya Sathaye, a journalist who holds pieces of his past.
The cast also features Kubbra Sait and Pavail Gulati in key roles.
While the film is titled Deva, Shahid clarified there’s no direct connection to Amitabh Bachchan’s Deewaar. However, in an interview with PTI, he acknowledged Bachchan’s legacy:
“We’ve all grown up idolizing Amit ji. His performances in films like Deewaar are benchmarks. It’s humbling to be part of any story that carries that kind of dramatic intensity.”
An excerpt from Hindustan Times’ review of Deva:
“Shahid Kapoor brings his A-game to the role, but the film, despite its thrilling premise, feels weighed down by layers that don’t quite click. It needed more action, less convolution. Still, it’s worth a watch for Shahid’s performance and a couple of stand-out moments.”
If you’re a fan of intense police thrillers, mystery, and character-driven action, Deva is definitely worth adding to your Netflix watchlist this weekend. It’s also a fresh take for those who missed the original Mumbai Police.
