‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Renewed for Season 2 as Young Killer’s Journey Deepens

Showtime confirms second season of hit prequel series, with showrunner Clyde Phillips returning and new twists in Dexter Morgan’s dark origin story set to unfold.

Los Angeles, April 1: Paramount+ with Showtime has officially renewed Dexter: Original Sin for a second season, keeping the bloody legacy of Dexter Morgan alive and thriving. The prequel, which follows a young Dexter in the early 1990s, concluded its 10-episode debut season in February 2025. Now, fans can look forward to a deeper dive into the origins of one of television’s most compelling antiheroes.

Returning showrunner Clyde Phillips will once again lead the writers’ room, which is set to begin work soon on season two. The upcoming chapter will continue charting Dexter’s evolution into a calculating serial killer, with Patrick Gibson reprising his role as young Dexter and Christian Slater returning as Harry Morgan, Dexter’s father and moral compass.

Set in 1991 Miami, Original Sin reveals the pivotal moments when Dexter, then just an intern at Miami Metro Police, begins committing his first murders — guided by Harry’s infamous “code.” The series has gained praise for its nostalgic ’90s aesthetic and detailed storytelling that enriches the Dexter universe.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Phillips said,

“This season’s a whole Easter egg hunt. We’re dropping breadcrumbs for fans of the original series while giving new viewers a twisted coming-of-age story. And we’re loving every bit of that ’90s and even ’70s throwback vibe.”

Michael C. Hall, who portrayed the original adult Dexter, not only serves as narrator in Original Sin but is also involved as executive producer. He’ll return to the screen in the upcoming Dexter: Resurrection, a present-day spinoff also helmed by Phillips and scheduled for release this summer.

Season one of Original Sin featured a strong ensemble cast including Molly Brown, Christina Milian, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, Reno Wilson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Patrick Dempsey. The finale teased more to come, suggesting Dexter’s descent into darkness is just getting started.

Produced by Showtime Studios and Counterpart Studios, the series is executive produced by Clyde Phillips, Scott Reynolds, Michael C. Hall, Mary Leah Sutton, Tony Hernandez, Lilly Burns, and Michael Lehmann.

As anticipation builds, Dexter fans can expect a thrilling second season filled with more psychological complexity, chilling kills, and nods to the legacy of one of TV’s most iconic characters.
