Did Chris Martin’s Clinginess Push Dakota Johnson Away for Good?

June 30, 2025: The fairytale romance between Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson has officially come to an end — and insiders claim it wasn’t a smooth breakup.

According to sources quoted by RadarOnline, Dakota called off their engagement after becoming increasingly frustrated with Chris’s clingy and controlling behavior. While Chris reportedly remains heartbroken, Dakota is said to be moving forward without regrets.

“Dakota loved Chris. She still does, but he became way too controlling and dependent on her in the end,” a source said. “It became suffocating and unbearable to live with. If she went away or didn’t answer his calls for even a short time, he’d completely lose it — even when they were in the same city.”

The insider also revealed that Chris’s moodiness and reluctance to maintain a social life were major sources of tension. “He was a sourpuss who didn’t approve of her going out with friends. He just wanted to stay in all the time.”

Back in April, the outlet reported concerns from Dakota’s friends, who believed Chris was holding her back professionally by discouraging her from networking with Hollywood filmmakers.

Now that the split is official, Dakota is reportedly reconnecting with old friends — many of whom Chris allegedly didn’t get along with. “They’re cheering the breakup and thrilled to have her back,” the source added.

However, not everyone is fully relaxed about the breakup. Those close to Dakota worry she might still have lingering feelings. “The only worry is that she might take him back,” said the insider. “But Dakota insists it’s over for good — especially because she can’t be with someone who denies her basic freedom.”
