November 15, 2024: Diljit Dosanjh, the popular Punjabi singer, is facing legal scrutiny ahead of his scheduled concert in Hyderabad on Friday, as the Telangana government has issued him a legal notice regarding his performance.
The notice, served just hours before the event, directs Diljit not to perform songs that promote alcohol, drugs, or violence. This action follows a representation from a Chandigarh resident, accompanied by video evidence, which claims that Diljit had sung songs promoting these themes during a live performance in New Delhi last month.
The specific songs cited in the notice include "CASE," "Panchatara," and "Patiala Peg," which the complainant alleges contain references to alcohol and drugs. In addition to these concerns, the Telangana government has also advised the concert organizers and the singer to avoid having children on stage, citing potential risks due to loud music and flashing lights that may be harmful to younger audiences.
The legal notice was issued by the District Welfare Officer of the Department of Welfare of Women and Children, Disabled and Senior Citizens in Rangareddy. The officer pointed out that concert guidelines allow children under 13 years to attend, but also noted the potential risks of exposure to loud sounds and flashing lights.
Despite this legal challenge, Diljit remains active on his Dil-Luminati tour, which kicked off in India in October, with performances in Delhi and Jaipur. He arrived in Hyderabad ahead of his Friday performance at GMR Arena, where he took some time to explore the city and seek blessings at a Shiva Temple and a Gurudwara. The legal notice, however, poses a significant question about how his setlist may need to be adjusted in light of these concerns.
It will be interesting to see how Diljit and the concert organizers respond to these demands and whether any adjustments are made to the performance in order to avoid further legal complications.
