December 21, 2024: Director James Gunn is celebrating the massive success of the Superman trailer, which was released on December 19, following an overwhelming response from fans and critics alike.
Gunn confirmed that the trailer has officially become the most viewed and most talked-about trailer in the history of both DC and Warner Bros., amassing over 250 million views and generating a million social media posts. Taking to his Instagram to express his gratitude, Gunn wrote, “Krypto really did take us home: With over 250 million views and a million social posts, Superman is officially the most viewed and the most talked about trailer in the history of both DC and Warner Bros. This is because of all of you: thank you! We’re incredibly grateful and, most of all, excited to share this movie with you in July. Happy Holidays!”
The upcoming Superman film is a reboot of the Superman franchise and stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Maria Gabriela de Faria, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Neva Howell in pivotal roles.
In the trailer, Superman is shown in a battered and bruised state, injured and lying in a frozen landscape. As he struggles, hope appears in the form of his loyal dog, Krypto. In a moment of vulnerability, Superman says to his companion, “Take me home,” which The Hollywood Reporter describes as a powerful sentiment in the trailer.
During a trailer launch event, Gunn spoke about how he approached the representation of Superman’s decency and the values he embodies, particularly in the context of America. He said, “I think that’s what ‘Take me home’ is all about. We do have sort of a battered vision of Superman at the beginning, and I think that is our country. I believe in the goodness of human beings, and I believe that most people in this country, despite their ideological beliefs or their politics, are doing their best to get by and trying to be good people, despite what it may seem like for the other side, no matter what that other side might be.”
He further compared it to the feeling one gets after getting a great haircut that others notice, adding, “It’s like when you get a nice haircut, and you forget about it, but then you walk around and everybody’s like, ‘Whoa, you look great, for once! I got to see other people see Superman.”
The trailer also teased other superheroes in Superman’s world, including Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, adding excitement for what promises to be a significant expansion of the DC universe.
With the Superman movie set for release in July 2025, the anticipation has reached new heights, with fans eagerly awaiting this new chapter in the Man of Steel’s story.
