Disney Announces ‘Coco 2’ In Development, Set For 2029 Release

March 21, 2025: Disney has officially announced that a sequel to the beloved animated film Coco is in the works. During the company’s Annual Shareholder Meeting, CEO Bob Iger confirmed that Coco 2 is set for a theatrical release in 2029. Although the film is still in its early stages, the announcement has already sparked excitement among fans who are eager to learn more about the continuation of the heartwarming and culturally rich story.

In his announcement, Iger teased that Coco 2 would be packed with “humor, heart, and adventure,” promising a film that would capture the same magic as the original. He also confirmed that key members of the Coco creative team, including director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina, would return to work on the sequel. Mark Nielsen, who previously worked on Toy Story 4 and Inside Out 2, will serve as the producer for the new film.

Released in 2017, Coco quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The film was lauded for its stunning animation, its authentic representation of Mexican culture, and its unforgettable music. It tells the story of Miguel, a young boy with dreams of becoming a musician, who is unexpectedly transported to the Land of the Dead. There, he embarks on a journey to find his great-great-grandfather, a deceased musician, and seeks to get his family’s blessing to pursue his musical passion.

CoCo won numerous awards, including two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Remember Me,” which was composed by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. The film also received a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture-Animated and several BAFTA and Critics’ Choice Awards.

In addition to the Coco 2 announcement, Disney is also working on a Coco-themed ride-through attraction for Disney California Adventure, further expanding the Coco legacy within the Disney brand.

As fans eagerly await the release of Coco 2, Disney is set to bring back the magic, music, and emotion that made the original film an all-time favorite. While specific plot details are still under wraps, the sequel is sure to continue the emotional and musical journey that audiences have come to love.
