Disney’s D23 Expo was abuzz with excitement on Friday night as the studio unveiled the highly anticipated trailer for Moana 2. Held at the Honda Centre, the event drew an impressive crowd of 15,000 fans, who greeted the stars with a thunderous standing ovation.
Dwayne Johnson, returning as the charismatic demigod Maui, electrified the audience with his larger-than-life presence. “This is the largest crowd that D23 has ever had in the history of Disney,” Johnson declared, leading the crowd in a spirited Hawaiian chant, “Tay-ho!,” according to Deadline.
Auli’i Cravalho, who reprises her role as Moana, captivated the audience with a live performance of the new song from the sequel, Who We’re Meant to Be. The performance was enhanced by traditional Hawaiian dancers, setting the tone for the evening’s festivities. Cravalho shared insights into the sequel with host Nicole Yvette Brown, revealing that Moana’s journey in the film involves exploring nearby islands in search of new people.
Dwayne Johnson expressed his excitement about the sequel, noting, “Maui is singing again in keys that don’t exist, and my hair looks fantastic.” He emphasized the film’s empowering theme, stating, “What I love about the sequel is that it’s about a young girl who is empowered that there’s more in life than what’s in front of her.”
The trailer, which was released on Disney’s official social media channels, gives fans a glimpse of Moana and Maui facing off against a colossal typhoon storm. The new adventure takes Moana to the lost islands of the Pacific, where she uncovers more about her people. Johnson teased the film’s high stakes, saying, “Wait till you see the villains we have in this one, it’s the storm of all storms.”
In addition to the excitement surrounding Moana 2, Johnson also introduced a new live-action sports documentary project titled Monster Jam. Johnson, who is overseeing the project, described it as a film about “eccentric and crazy drivers” and expressed his enthusiasm for bringing the idea to Disney.
Moana 2 is set to hit theaters on November 27, just in time for Thanksgiving. The sequel promises to deliver another captivating chapter in Moana’s journey, filled with adventure, empowerment, and the enchanting spirit of the Pacific Islands.
