DNA Movie Review: Can Thriller Element Save Its Flawed Story?
June 20, 2025: Director Nelson Venkatesan’s latest film DNA, starring Atharvaa and Nimisha Sajayan, aims to weave a complex narrative of love, mental health, and mystery but ultimately struggles to deliver a cohesive and engaging story.
The film opens with Anand (Atharvaa), a man burdened by tragedy, and Dhivya (Nimisha), a mentally challenged woman, whose unlikely marriage promises a fresh start. However, their relationship and individual struggles are only superficially explored, leaving many questions unanswered.
The movie tackles sensitive themes such as mental illness, postpartum psychosis, and societal pressures on marriage, but the portrayal lacks depth and clarity. Dhivya’s character is particularly underdeveloped, making it hard for viewers to understand her motivations and mental condition. This weak character development affects the emotional impact of the story.
As the film shifts towards an investigative thriller following a suspected baby swap, it loses momentum with rushed narration and convenient plot points. Key revelations are revealed too early, diminishing suspense and engagement. The supporting characters, including police officer Chinnasamy (Balaji Sakthivel), are similarly underused.
DNA reflects Nelson Venkatesan’s desire to address important issues but falls short due to hurried storytelling and inconsistent character arcs. While the film carries noble intentions, it struggles to maintain a gripping pace or emotional resonance. DNA is now playing in theatres but may leave audiences wanting a more tightly woven thriller.
