‘Don’ Director Chandra Barot Passes Away at 86 in Mumbai

July 20, 2025: Filmmaking legend Chandra Barot, best known for directing the iconic 1978 film Don starring Amitabh Bachchan, passed away on Sunday at a hospital in Bandra. He was 86 years old.

Barot’s wife, Deepa Barot, confirmed his demise, revealing that he had been battling pulmonary fibrosis for the past seven years. He was undergoing treatment at Guru Nanak Hospital under the care of Dr. Manish Shetty and had earlier been admitted to Jaslok Hospital.

Chandra Barot’s directorial debut with Don remains a landmark in Bollywood history. The film not only became a blockbuster but also marked an emotional and creative milestone for Barot, who took on the project to support his close friend and cinematographer-producer Nariman Irani.

Before embarking on his directorial journey, Barot returned to India from Tanzania amid racial unrest and began his career in the Hindi film industry as an assistant director to the renowned actor-filmmaker Manoj Kumar.

Barot’s contribution to Indian cinema, especially through Don, continues to inspire filmmakers and audiences alike. His legacy will live on through the timeless classic he brought to life.
