It was supposed to be a night of celebration and prestige for Hollywood legend Denzel Washington, who received the honorary Palme d’Or at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. But a tense encounter on the red carpet momentarily shifted the spotlight from the actor’s remarkable career to an unexpected clash with a photographer.

The two-time Academy Award winner was attending the premiere of his latest film, Highest 2 Lowest, directed by longtime collaborator Spike Lee, when the confrontation occurred. In videos circulating on social media, Denzel is seen exchanging heated words with a photographer stationed along the red carpet. The situation escalated after the photographer touched the actor’s arm in an apparent attempt to defuse the tension.

“Stop it, stop it, stop it,” Washington said sternly, visibly annoyed as he pulled away and warned, “Don’t put your hands on me again,” before walking off.

Prior to the incident, Washington had been seen engaging in a cheerful conversation with co-star A$AP Rocky, while Spike Lee chatted nearby. The mood shifted quickly when Washington turned his attention toward the photographers.

Despite the red carpet altercation, the night took a celebratory turn as Cannes officials surprised Washington with the prestigious honorary Palme d’Or, awarded in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to cinema over several decades. Unlike some honorary awards announced in advance — such as Robert De Niro’s earlier this year — Washington’s accolade was a complete surprise.

“This is a total surprise for me,” the actor said while accepting the honour, visibly moved by the recognition.

The Palme d’Or d’honneur is one of the highest distinctions at the festival and has previously been awarded to cinematic giants like Tom Cruise, George Lucas, and Studio Ghibli.

The minor red carpet flare-up has not overshadowed Washington’s long legacy in film, nor the enthusiastic reception to Highest 2 Lowest. The actor, known for his commanding presence on and off screen, once again made headlines — this time for both brilliance and boldness.
