Dramatic Scenes in Courtroom-Lawyers Clash Over Representing Saif Ali Khan’s Alleged Attacker in Court

Drama unfolds in Bandra courtroom as two lawyers compete to represent the accused in Saif Ali Khan’s high-profile assault case, leading the magistrate to mediate.

January 20, 2025: The normally serious atmosphere of a Bandra courtroom was disrupted on Sunday when two lawyers vied to represent Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, the Bangladeshi man arrested for allegedly attacking Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan. The 30-year-old accused was produced before the metropolitan magistrate for remand proceedings following his arrest in Thane.

Amid heightened security, Shehzad was brought into court. When asked by the magistrate if he had any complaints against the police, Shehzad replied in the negative. He was then escorted to the accused box at the back of the courtroom.

The drama began when one lawyer stepped forward, claiming to represent Shehzad, and prepared to secure his signature on the vakalatnama (a legal document authorizing representation). Before he could proceed, another lawyer jostled his way to the accused and obtained Shehzad’s signature instead.

The confusion left the court in disarray until the magistrate intervened, suggesting the two lawyers appear as a team for the accused. Both agreed to the arrangement, and the court resumed focus on the remand proceedings. Shehzad was subsequently remanded to police custody for five days.

High-Profile Case

The case has drawn significant attention since the attack on Saif Ali Khan on January 16. According to police, Shehzad broke into the actor’s 12th-floor apartment in Bandra’s upscale Satguru Sharan building around 2:30 a.m. with the intent to commit theft. During the intrusion, he allegedly stabbed the actor multiple times.

Khan, 54, underwent emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital following the attack and is currently recovering. Doctors have indicated that he may be discharged soon.

Arrest of the Accused

Mumbai Police arrested Shehzad in Thane after an intense search. He was identified based on CCTV footage from the actor’s building. Police revealed that Shehzad hails from Jhalokathi district in Bangladesh’s Barisal division. During his five months in Mumbai, he had worked various menial jobs, including at a housekeeping agency.

The courtroom drama and Shehzad’s arrest have added another layer to an already high-profile case that continues to make headlines.
