Dwayne Johnson's Transformation Wows Fans in 'The Smashing Machine' Trailer
April 30, 2025: The first trailer for The Smashing Machine, starring Dwayne Johnson, has been released, and fans are in for a surprise as the actor, known for his muscular frame, appears unrecognizable in his portrayal of two-time UFC heavyweight champion Mark Kerr.
Directed by Benny Safdie, who co-directed Uncut Gems and Good Time with his brother Josh, this marks Safdie’s solo directorial debut. The biopic delves into the life of Kerr, a mixed martial artist who fought professionally from 1997 to 2009. The film explores Kerr’s rise to prominence, his struggles with substance abuse, and his tumultuous personal life, themes first captured in the 2002 HBO documentary The Smashing Machine.
Alongside Johnson, the film also stars Emily Blunt as Kerr’s wife, Dawn Staples. This marks the second collaboration between Johnson and Blunt, who previously teamed up for Disney’s Jungle Cruise in 2021. The ensemble cast also includes Bas Rutten, Lyndsey Gavin, and Oleksandr Usyk.
The story is set against the backdrop of Kerr’s turbulent career in the world of MMA, including his battles with addiction and strained relationships with trainers and loved ones. Kerr’s four ADCC World Championship titles solidify his legacy as one of the sport’s most accomplished fighters, though his personal demons often overshadowed his success in the ring.
The film is scheduled for release on October 3, 2025.
