November 20, 2024: The recently released film The Sabarmati Report has generated significant attention across India, receiving endorsements from political figures, industry veterans, and the public alike. The movie, which addresses the 2002 Godhra train coach-burning incident and its aftermath, has been praised for offering a fresh perspective on the tragic event that led to widespread riots in Gujarat. Directed by Dheeraj Sarna, the film challenges distorted narratives about the event, shedding light on its historical significance.
Producer Ektaa Kapoor, speaking at a special screening in Delhi, expressed her excitement and nervousness over the film’s reception. She acknowledged the presence of key political figures like Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Minister of State Suresh Gopi at the screening and thanked them for their support. Kapoor said, “I am overwhelmed by the response… It is a factual film, based on true events, and I think people will like it.”
The movie has sparked political interest as well, with Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma announcing that The Sabarmati Report would be made tax-free in the state. He praised the film for “realistically depicting that horrific period of history” and for countering the “misleading and false narratives” surrounding it. Similarly, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also declared the film tax-free in the state and lauded its impactful portrayal. Yadav further spoke to actor Vikrant Massey, who stars in the film, congratulating him for his performance and encouraging ministers to watch it.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also weighed in on the film’s importance, endorsing it in a social media post. He remarked, “It is good that this truth is coming out, and that too in a way common people can see it. A fake narrative can persist only for a limited period. Eventually, the facts will always come out!” The Prime Minister’s endorsement sparked widespread discussion, with actor Riddhi Dogra, who plays a key role in the film, expressing her gratitude for his praise, calling it “the biggest reward” for the entire team.
In addition to political leaders, the film has attracted the attention of several other prominent figures. Actor Vikrant Massey met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow, where the CM expressed admiration for the film. Massey thanked the Chief Minister on Instagram, sharing his gratitude for the recognition.
At the heart of The Sabarmati Report lies the harrowing story of the February 2002 Godhra train incident, which killed at least 59 Hindu pilgrims returning from Ayodhya, triggering riots across Gujarat. The film presents a critical look at the event and its aftermath, offering a nuanced narrative that counters the versions that have often been propagated over the years.
The film features a strong cast including Raashii Khanna, Riddhi Dogra, and Vikrant Massey. Produced by Ektaa Kapoor, Shobha Kapoor, Amul V. Mohan, and Anshul Mohan, The Sabarmati Report is not just a film but a conversation starter about history, truth, and the political narratives that shape public perception.
