Ellen Pompeo Explains Why Leaving ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Completely Doesn’t Make Sense

April 16, 2025: Ellen Pompeo, who has played the iconic role of Dr. Meredith Grey since Grey’s Anatomy premiered in 2005, has revealed why she has no plans to fully walk away from the long-running medical drama.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pompeo opened up about the emotional and financial factors influencing her decision to remain connected to the show, even after stepping back from regular appearances.

“If I were to walk away completely, everybody gets to make money from my hard work for 20 years and I wouldn’t make any money,” Pompeo said candidly, pointing out the practical side of staying involved with the series she helped turn into a global phenomenon. Reportedly, she currently earns around $20 million annually through her deal with the network.

But it’s not just about money—Pompeo also acknowledged the deep connection she shares with the fans. “The show means a lot to people. I want to have an attitude of gratitude toward the show,” she added.

While she restructured her contract in 2022 to reduce her on-screen commitments and spend more time with her family, Pompeo has not ruled out returning for select episodes. Her adjusted schedule allows her to enjoy a “nice balance” in life, as she put it.

Outside of Grey’s Anatomy, Pompeo has also been exploring other creative paths, including her involvement in the limited series Good American Family, which she described as a project she could “completely disappear into.”

Even with fewer appearances as Meredith Grey, it’s clear Pompeo still considers herself a key part of Grey’s Anatomy’s DNA—and isn’t ready to give that up just yet.
