Elton John Opens Up About Vision Loss: “I Can’t See My Boys Play Anymore”

The music legend reveals emotional toll of eye infection, retirement from touring, and how he finds strength in family and music

London, April 6:
Legendary singer-songwriter Sir Elton John, 78, has shared the deeply personal impact of his recent vision impairment, revealing he can no longer see clearly enough to enjoy everyday moments — including watching his sons, Zachary and Elijah, play sports.

In a candid interview with The Times of London, Elton spoke about how an eye infection in late 2024 led to significant sight loss in his right eye, delaying the release of his latest album Who Believes in Angels?, recorded alongside Brandi Carlile.

“I can’t see TV, I can’t read. I can’t see my boys playing rugby and soccer, and it has been a very stressful time,” he admitted. “It’s distressing. You get emotional, but you have to get used to it because I’m lucky to have the life I have… So you say to yourself, just get on with it.”

Despite the challenges, Elton said he finds comfort in family — spending time with his husband David Furnish and their two sons — and has no regrets about stepping away from touring after headlining Glastonbury Festival in 2023, calling it the perfect finale.

“I couldn’t do a better show than Glastonbury, so what would be the point? You have to know when to fold it,” he said, adding with humor, “I used to do 120 shows a year. No wonder these little fingers have had it.”

While battling the emotional toll of vision loss, Elton remains creatively energized. His new album has already received praise, with fans and critics noting his vocal performance is his strongest in decades.

“I’m riddled with music. It is the greatest gift I have ever been given, and here I am at 78, feeling better than I ever have. This is a b*****d [pointing at his eye], but we’ll get over it. There is a lot more to do.”

Who Believes in Angels? represents a new chapter in Elton’s storied career — a reminder of his resilience, passion, and unwavering love for music and family.
