‘Emilia Perez’ Actor Karla Sofia Gascon Deactivates X Account After Facing Backlash For Offensive Posts

February 1, 2025: Actress Karla Sofia Gascon, known for her role in the Oscar-nominated film Emilia Perez, has recently deactivated her X (formerly Twitter) account following the resurfacing of offensive posts from 2020 and 2021. The posts sparked significant backlash, particularly for controversial comments on topics like Muslims, George Floyd, and the diversity seen at the 2021 Oscars.

Gascon’s X account (@karsiagascon) was deactivated on Friday morning, as confirmed by Variety. The actress quickly issued an apology for the posts, acknowledging the hurt they caused. In her statement, she expressed regret, stating, “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt. As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”

Among the posts that resurfaced, Gascon criticized the diversity seen during the 2021 Oscars ceremony, writing, “More and more the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films, I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M. Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala.”

Additionally, Gascon made controversial remarks about George Floyd, who was killed by a police officer in 2020, triggering nationwide protests. Gascon called him a “drug addict swindler,” a comment that added to the widespread criticism.

Gascon’s apology was met with a mixture of reactions, with many expressing disappointment and frustration over her comments, while others acknowledged her public contrition.
