Emilio Estevez Calls Late Director Joel Schumacher A “Bully” On Film Set

April 19, 2025: Actor and filmmaker Emilio Estevez has opened up about his less-than-pleasant experience working with late director Joel Schumacher on the 1985 cult classic St. Elmo’s Fire. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Estevez didn’t hold back as he described Schumacher as “a nightmare on set” and “a bully.”

Estevez, who was part of the iconic Brat Pack ensemble, revealed that the experience had a lasting impact on how he approaches his own directing career.

“No kidding. And [he] was a bully,” Estevez said of Schumacher. “I vowed never to speak to my actors that way.”

While his time on the set was challenging, the Breakfast Club star acknowledged that the difficult experience became a valuable lesson in leadership and compassion.

“If I ever got a chance to direct in 1984, I thought, this is the best lesson a young actor who wants to direct could ever get. Thank you, Joel,” he added, seemingly referring to the importance of treating others with kindness.

St. Elmo’s Fire, released in 1985, became a defining film of the decade and a touchstone for a generation. It starred a cast of then-rising young actors including Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Andrew McCarthy, Mare Winningham, and Andie MacDowell. The film followed a group of recent college graduates navigating adulthood, love, and identity.

Schumacher, known for directing films such as Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, passed away in June 2020 at the age of 80. Despite the acclaim he received over his career, Estevez’s comments offer a glimpse into the complexities behind the camera during one of the 1980s’ most beloved films.

Now a respected filmmaker himself, Estevez’s reflections highlight how even tough experiences can serve as powerful lessons in empathy and professionalism.
