Empuraan Box Office Collection Day 10: Mohanlal-Prithviraj Film Inches Towards ₹100 Cr Despite ED Heat
April 6, 2025: Prithviraj Sukumaran’s directorial, Empuraan, starring Mohanlal, has shown remarkable staying power at the box office despite controversies surrounding its content and financial scrutiny of its makers. The film is now just shy of the ₹100 crore domestic milestone—a feat achieved by only a handful of Malayalam films.

On its second Saturday, Empuraan earned ₹3.50 crore across all languages, a modest rise from Friday’s ₹2.90 crore. Although the film hasn’t seen explosive second-week growth, it continues to draw crowds, especially for its Malayalam version, which dominates the total collection.

The film’s strong political undertone has drawn scrutiny. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) recently raided the offices of Gokulam Gopalan, one of the producers, for alleged foreign exchange violations under FEMA. Meanwhile, Prithviraj Sukumaran has received a notice from the Income Tax Department for clarification on his earnings from 2022 releases Jana Gana Mana, Gold, and Kaduva.
Further backlash emerged over scenes referencing the 2002 Gujarat riots. Responding to public outrage, 24 voluntary edits were made, including:
Mohanlal, the film’s lead, expressed regret over the controversy and promised sensitivity going forward.
While Empuraan is now the second-highest-grossing Malayalam film, it still trails behind Manjummel Boys (₹141.61 crore). Upcoming Malayalam releases like Bazooka, Alappuzha Gymkhana, and Maranamass, along with Jaat in Hindi and Good Bad Ugly in Tamil, may pose fresh challenges.
Empuraan is the second installment in the Lucifer trilogy, following the massive success of Lucifer in 2019. With its mix of action, politics, and stylized storytelling, the film has sparked nationwide debates and fan fervor alike.
